Packing, moving and cleaning up aftermath

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

I spent my whole weekend packing, moving out stuffs and cleaning up my apartment. It was very tiring and frustrating at the same time. It's like everyone didn't want us to move out. First, our UHaul reservation got canceled without them telling me in advance. We went there, waited in line for almost 30 minutes and when we finally reached the front desk, the representative told us that they didn't have any trucks available for us, so we need to reschedule for Sunday morning and we would only get it for 4.5 hours instead of the original 16 hours. Second, we still didn't get any storage. We headed to the storage place and they said they had someone just called and said that they moved their stuffs out from the storage. We had a huge hope on that one. We waited for about 30 minutes again because they need to check and make sure that the storage were really empty. Unfortunately, no. It wasn't empty. We left Andrew's number and told them to call us back if there's any open storage. We started to worry. Later that evening, they called and said they would have one on Monday morning. Without thinking, we said YES! A little happiness in there and we started packing. Andrew took a shower and his phone rang. I didn't pick it up for him because I was too lazy getting up from the bed =P When he finished showering he asked me if anyone called and I said yes. He said it's the storage people. He tried to call them back but the line was busy. We started to worry again. After 15 minutes of trying, we could get them on the phone. It turned out that they had one smaller storage available on that day! But....because we didn't pick up the phone, they gave it to someone else =( a little disappointment and regrets.. Well, at least we had a storage.

We started packing and cleaning up. I didn't get that much sleep and we had to wake up quite early on Sunday to pick up the UHaul. It was very crowded when we reached ther
e. We were afraid that they would say they didn't have any trucks for us again. Fortunately, they did have one for us ready. We picked it up and headed back to our apartment. The fun part began..It was only 2 of us because all of our friends were either back in Indo or had to move out from their apartments as well. We had A LOT of stuffs. You could tell when you see the pictures below.

First thing we lifted was the sofa and we put
the entertainment center on top of it. It was HEAVY! We continued by moving some other big stuffs that we couldn't take with cars. It took us 2 trips to complete and my storage was FULL! We couldn't put anymore stuffs in it and so we had to put our study chairs in friend's apartment. We helped someone else moving and it was even more tiring than ours because she lived in the 2nd floor. We returned the Uhaul and had a good lunch @ Nanking restaurant (used to be CiGar).

Heading back home, we had some rests before starting
to clean up the bathroom and the kitchen. Those two places were really dirty. And when I said dirty, it really was. It took us forever to clean those two spots. We finished around 1am, took a shower and headed to bed. It was really nice to finally laid down on my bed.

I woke up @ 10.30am the next morning and our activity began with another day of packing, moving and cleaning up. Since we didn't have the truck for today, we had to drive b
ack and forth to move our stuffs to the storage. We got the key from the storage office and started to move the boxes. It was really tiring and the boxes were HEAVY! When we were home, Andrew checked his email and it turned out that we needed to move out by noon the next day! We were freak out, afraid that we wouldn't have enough time to finish. Without any rests, we started moving stuffs again. We finished around 7.30pm. I switched my car back with Yenny's and we rewarded ourselves with COLD STONE! It's been a while since the last time I had cold stone. It tasted better than before (probably just because I was tired and hungry =P). After that we went back home and started cleaning the kitchen again. It didn't take us that long. We had showers afterwards and tried to get some sleeps because we needed to wake up early to finish up our cleaning and moving. I didn't get much sleep, probably only 2 hours of sleep.

I woke up at 7.30am and started packing up the rest of my stuffs. Andrew went to Walmart to buy tapes. I vacuumed my room and put my stuffs on the car. We had one last trip to the storage and ut the rest of our stuffs. We donated some of Sally's stuffs to Trinity outlet. We returned the keys to the office, went to Livesay office to give our rent checks for the ne
w apartment, had a lunch, went to Insight to cancel the internet connection and finally drove back to Chicago!

I was really sleepy during the last 40 miles of driving. I stopped at one of
the oasis and bought Starbucks. After I felt better, I continued driving. I picked up my laptop on the way back. People from ACP called me early this morning to let me know that they fixed my laptop. I was surprised they didn't give me a new adapter and replaced the system board and harness. It was really expensive! The parts itself cost $385 in total, not including labor (I think labor is another $100ish). Lucky I still have my warranty so I didn't have to pay for it. I asked them why they didn't give me a new adapter and they gave some explanations. I signed the paperworks and headed back home. I was happy to get my laptop back. I had lots and lots of works from EAS that I needed to finish. I tried my laptop first thing when I arrived at home. IT DIDN'T WORK! The adapter got even worse than before. I called them and they finally agreed to give me a new adapter. I have to pick it up either this Friday or next Monday. And I don't have to pay for the new adapter too =) I love Toshiba ^^

And now..here I am in my apartment. Trying to get some sleep but I think the Starbucks make me awake. I'm tired and sleepy, but I can't sleep..

Here are the pictures after the
clean up..
Looks a lot nicer don't you think? =D
Well, got to go now..have to catch some sleeps..

Fire drill and farewell party

Thursday, July 26, 2007

Fire alarms in my building was ringing like crazy this morning. I thought they just wanted to test the alarm, because that was what they usually do, so I still sit back and relax in my cube. Then I realized that everyone was gone. The secretary, Tracy, walked to me and said, "It's a drill, you have to leave the building." Still confused, I just took my cell phones and walked to the nearest stairs. A lot of people were already there, lining up to get down. I think some people got annoyed with this drill. I heard some people talked to each other saying they had stuffs to do. When I reached downstairs, a lot of people had already gathered at the parking lot. There was firefighters there. I started to think that there was a real fire in the building. I met my coworker and he brought all his stuffs with him. He told me he ran back to his cube and took his laptop, cell phone and wallet and he was surprised I didn't bring anything. We waited there for about 10 minutes then someone talked with a microphone telling everybody to back up. A second after that, it started raining! .....and the fire drill was canceled >_< everyone headed back to their offices.

I was bored to death today because I didn't really have anything to do. Well, I actually do, but I'm stuck. But at around 2pm, Tracy came to my cube and told me that there's a farewell party in the mobility area and I should go there. Again, I didn't realize that everyone around me wasn't there. I walked out to the mobility area and all my coworkers were there. Someone in the team was leaving so they made a farewell party for her. Nice, isn't it? There was a chocolate vanilla cake, cookies and STRAWBERRY DIPPED CHOCOLATE! I grabbed a piece of cake and 2 strawberries! I love strawberries and chocolate, and strawberry dipped chocolate is perfect! I didn't even know the person who would be leaving, but I knew I love the treats =P

A day at home..

I spent almost the whole day at home yesterday. I only slept for 3 hours the day before and when I woke up i the morning, I got a terrible headache. I could barely get up from my bed. My felt really dizzy. So, I decided to work from home at least until lunch time and then go to the office around 11. I told my mentor that I won't be there until after lunch because I wasn't feeling well. To my surprise, he said that I could just work from home the whole day =D An hour after that, another problem came. I got a stomachache! >_< Luckily, I brought mylanta from Purdue last week. So I took 1 of the tablet. Still not feeling better and my head was still spinning. I tried to get some sleep, but I can't. Something was really bothering me =( I did some work and emailed my mentor some documentations because I felt guilty not coming to the office, but still get paid ^^! I felt better at around 3pm, so I decided to have some groceries shopping @ Dominick's. I went to the post office before that because I had to send some stuff I sold from ebay. The line was really long! I decided to use the automatic machine. After spending 15 minutes using the automated machine, I still couldn't figure out how to add the delivery confirmation. I finally got in the line and waited for another 15 minutes. The lady then helped me and it took 30 minutes to send all 6 packages! I spent the whole freakin' 1 hour in the post office! *sigh* I drove to Dominick's after that. Got some oranges, apples and sliced beef. Headed back home and my head was spinning around like crazy! I lay down on my bed for several minutes and the headache was gone. It was really a long day for me..

Because I'm a girl - English translation

Saturday, July 21, 2007

It's impossible to understand what's going through a guy's heart
You told me that you wanted me and now that I've given you everything, you tell me you're leaving
You told me that it was the first time you felt this way,
and said that I was special
I believed you.. and it was my happiness

You should have told me that your feelings had faded
I had no idea, and continued to depend on you
Although I say I hate you now, I'll be missing you
Because I'm a girl to whom love is everything

They say that when you give a guy all he wants he quickly gets bored
And now I know that's the truth...
And although I tell myself, I'll never be tricked by love again
I fall in love, and my heart is broken again

You should have told me that your feelings had faded
I had no idea, and continued to depend on you
Although I say I hate you now, I'll be missing you
Because I'm a girl to whom love is everything

[girl]
Today we broke up...
You told me to meet someone better than you, and be happy...
You're just like all the other guys...
What happened to when you told me that you loved me?
Honestly, I don't want you to be happy
What am I going to do if you really forget about me?
I'm in so much pain, more pain than I can bare...
Because I'm still in love with you...

You should have told me that your feelings had faded
I had no idea, and continued to depend on you
Although I say I hate you now, I'll be missing you
Because I'm a girl to whom love is everything

[boy]
There's someone I'm in love with...
Although I can't be with her now...
I'm still in love with her...

[translated from Korean song by KISS-Because I'm a Girl]

1-cent tops

Last week, I ordered some tops from LaRedoute.com because of their 1-cent sale. People said that those won't come and those are just price mistakes. But I kept my finger crossed. I ordered twice. The first order was 21 tops for 21 cents with free shipping! I made the second order 2 days later because they have new stuffs on sale, so I got 16 tops for 16 cents also with free shipping! I kept checking my order status waiting for either a cancellation or a shipping confirmation. I didn't get my order confirmation through email at first and so I thought it was canceled. But, stupid me, I entered the wrong email address to send the confirmation email. A little bit of hope because other people in the forums said they got their confirmation 10 minutes after placing their orders. The next day, people complained that their orders were missing from their account page. I quickly checked mine and yes, they're gone. I was a little upset, but hey, 1-cent tops, that's not possible, right? Especially with the free shipping! Shipping those tops itself will cost more than what we paid. Several hours later, people started talking about some of their orders are shipped. The orders that were gone from their page were back and the status changed to 'shipped'! Again, I checked mine and yes, it changed to 'shipped' now! Wow, I was so surprised. They even gave us UPS tracking number. I checked it and it says "DELIVERED"!!!!!! Since I put my purdue address for the shipping info, I didn't know if the stuff was actually delivered or not. To make sure, I asked my cousin if there's any package for me. And he said yes! He said the UPS guy has just left a minute ago. I was sooooo happyyyyy!!! I've never thought those 1-cent tops will actually be delivered.

I was back to Purdue last night and my package was in my room. Quite a big package I might say. I opened it and there they were. 16 tops wrapped individually! 5 of them were out of stock, but I'm already happy with what I've got. The tops are just an OK quality. I like some of those and some look cheap. But well, I can't complain! 16 cents for 20 tops! Yes, 20! Because there are 2 of those that were 1 cent for 3 tops =) I got 10 and my sister got 10. What a nice sister I am =P

Now..waiting for my second order..The order status from their website hasn't changed since I placed the order. Hopefully it will come too. HAPPY! =D

Take your kids to work day

Thursday, July 19, 2007

Today is "Take your kids to work" day at my office. There are a lot of kids running around the cubicles with and without their parents. I heard there are 650 kids registered for this event. I volunteered to be one of the scooper for the Ice Cream Social in the evening. There are 15 of us volunteered. Four of us got the topping areas and the rest of us became the ice cream scoopers. The event was supposed to start at 3.45pm, but by 3.30pm a lot of kids has already waited in line to get their ice cream! So the booth opened 10 minutes earlier. Those kids are really funny. Whenever I handed an ice cream to them, they wanted to pick one for themselves and compared one to another to get the biggest scoop! The parents were hilarious as well. Some of them are pretty shy to ask if they could get one for themselves. As soon as I told them "you could get one for yourself if you want", they were like "oh, really?" and they took one with a big happy smile, just like their kids. After around 30 minutes, the kids that have already got their ice cream came back and brought their spoons. They said they wanted a second ice cream and they showed us their spoons. We were kinda' confused, but we let them took the ice cream anyway. After a while, we found out that someone said near the topping areas that the kids could get another round of ice cream if they brought their spoons inside. There is this one little boy that asked for his second ice cream from me. He showed me his spoon and I gave him one more cup of ice cream with another spoon. He tried to used his spoon from before and because the cup wasn't that big and both of his hands were full, he asked me "how about my spoon? can I just use my old spoon instead of this one?" He's soooo innocent when he told me that. So I told him to throw away the old spoon and just use the new spoon. He smiled and walked away.
After about an hour, there were not that many kids around asking for ice cream, so we got our cup of ice creams and of course a lot of toppings! The ice cream is really good! I put some hershey's chocolate and m&ms. It looked like the cafetaria sold the ice cream for $2.95 per scoop! It's much more expensive than cold stone! And cold stone toppings are better too. I got one for my mentor as well, but he wasn't in his cube, so I just put it there with a note. Hopefully it didn't melt by the time he got back to his cube.
I will have another ice cream social event on Monday =D Free ice cream is really nice especially during summer time! And the kids were cute too =)

I've just checked my emails and my supervisor at EAS wrote about a similar opportunity in College of Science. He said with 5 of us trying to divide 40 hours/week, it might be over-crowded and so we could apply to that job if we want to and he will write us a recommendation. Then I replied to him saying that I will apply to that job and ask where I should send my resume to. His reply made happy! He said, "I hope you don't get the job, you've become far to valuable to lose. :-D" I don't have any intention to leave, but just in case they think they have too many people and decide to kick out one of us, it's safe to have something in hand, don't you think? And so I replies to him saying that I will just apply in case they decide to kick us out. And guess what he replies! He said that don't apply if I don't want to, just stay and he will make sure I have a job there until I graduate =D

Well, he really made my day..It's really nice to know that people want you to stay =)
